Literacy and Numeracy

RHS LIBRARY SPACE

Rutherglen High School provides a supportive space for students, where they can access a wide selection of digital and physical resources. Our Library staff are 'on deck' to assist students with research, and teach them how to access relevant, reliable digital resources. Students are welcome and encouraged to use their Library Space before school (from 8.35am), during lunch times, and after school (until 4pm).  Parents/guardians of RHS students are welcome to borrow from our Library, via the Library Space. Please email our Library Manager, Lou Webb with any queries at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

Literacy

Students with literacy needs are well supported at Rutherglen High School. In Years 7 and 8 small literacy classes (in sizes of two to eight) are organised for those needing extra literacy learning. In Years 9 and 10 a Foundation English stream is provided for each year. VCAL English Intermediate in Year 11 and VCAL English Senior in Year 12 are available for students with literacy difficulties.

Within mainstream classes, teachers cater for students with literacy difficulties by modifying work appropriately. Teachers frequently attend workshops to upgrade their literacy teaching skills. Students know that teachers are willing to help them outside class as well, and this easy availability of teachers is greatly appreciated by students and parents alike.

Also, in Year 7 community volunteers work with selected students on a one-on-one basis for a term, using the 'Making A Difference' programme.

Numeracy
Our Literacy-Numeracy Celebration Day allows students to practice their skills.

Many Maths classes have two teachers to help students with their numeracy skills and the Numeracy teachers also organise individual plans and extension programmes to make numeracy achievable and interesting.
